Your route takes you through the vineyards to Andlau, where you'll pass the beautiful Romanesque abbey church. Then climb through the forest to Ungersberg (901m). Enjoy the impressive view from the Tour Héring over the Rhine valley before continuing on to Blienschwiller, where you'll spend the night at a winegrower's.
6H walk excluding breaks | 21km | Déniv + 810m | Déniv -790m
Today's route takes you past the castle ruins of the imposing Bernstein, the Ortenbourg keep (11th century) and Ramstein. Arrival in the charming Piedmont village of Châtenois, surrounded by ramparts and vineyards. Stop off at a vineyard cellar to taste some excellent Alsatian wines.
4-5 H walking / 13km - Ascent +330m / -360m
From the fortified village of Châtenois, you enter the Hautes Vosges and a more pre-alpine atmosphere. The trail first takes you to the Montagne des Singes, home to over
200 Barbary Macaques, who will surprise you with their proximity. Continuing on your way, you'll pass by the mighty 12th-century Haut-Koenigsbourg castle (visit included), guaranteed to take you back to the Middle Ages! You'll then pass through Thannenkirch and on through the vineyards to the beautiful, touristy village of Ribeauvillé. Spend the night in this medieval town.
6 H walking / 20km - Ascent +690m / -610m
On this stage, there are three more buildings to contemplate, including the imposing Château de St Ulrich overlooking the famous wine village of Ribeauvillé, before descending into the valley. The trail then wends its way through the forest and over several passes, including the Koeningsstuhl or "King's Seat", the highest point of this small sandstone massif. Return to the village of Aubure for a well-deserved break in the highest village in the Vosges, in the heart of nature.
4H walking/ 12km- Difference in altitude + 670m / -150m
The Hautes Vosges really come into their own when you reach the summit of Brézouard and its magnificent view (1229m). You'll take the Col des Bagenelles at 903m to reach
The commune of Le Bonhomme. Your evening stop is at Etang du Devin at 946m, with its breathtaking views over Alsace and the Black Forest. The site is a former glacial lake that has become a protected peat bog.
5H30 walk/ 18 KM Ascent = 740m/ -580m
On your last day on the trail, you'll take on a magnificent 25 km high-altitude hike! Once you've climbed the Tête des Faux (an infamous battlefield), you'll be walking permanently above 1100m in the hautes Chaumes. You'll need to be vigilant, as the area is riddled with traps (holes, barbed wire, etc.) and it's advisable to stay on the trail. Next, you'll pass Lac Blanc (1058m), the deepest lake in the Hautes Vosges. Finally, the trail takes you up to the crests, offering a majestic panorama of the Alsatian valleys.
Finally, you return to the valley at Munster, where your tour ends at the railway station.
